چکیده

Scientific interest on chromium removal from water and wastewater has escalated recently. Chromium compounds exist in the environment naturally but are mostly found due to anthropogenic activities (tanning, paint, cement industries, etc.). Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is of major environmental importance because it is one of the most stable chromium forms found in the environment. It is soluble, highly toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic. Conventional methods of Cr(VI) treatment are mainly physicochemical, such as ion exchange, filtration, precipitation, electrochemical treatment, chemical reduction and adsorption. However, these methods have significant drawbacks such as the production of toxic sludge or other secondary products which require further processing. Therefore, an environmentally friendly, low-cost treatment method should be developed. The use of microorganisms has received much attention in recent years since they carry a wide range of binding sites for heavy metal ions. Advances in the fields of environmental microbiology and biotechnology indicate that bacteria, fungi, yeast and algae, either as pure or mixed cultures, can remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions under aerobic and/or anaerobic conditions. Cr(VI) reduction is significantly affected by various process parameters such as initial Cr(VI) concentration, carbon source, inoculum volume and age, initial pH, and incubation temperature.

An Exploratory Study on the Pathways of Cr (VI) Reduction in Sulfate-reducing Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) Reactor.

Electroplating wastewater contains both Cr (VI) and sulfate. So Cr (VI) removal under sulfate-rich condition is quite complicated. This study mainly investigates the pathways for Cr (VI) removal under biological sulfate-reducing condition in the up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor. Two potential pathways are found for the removal of Cr (VI). The first one is the sulfidogenesis-induced C...

Chromium bioremediation by Alcaligenes sp. strain newly isolated from chromite mine of Sabzevar

In this work, CKCr-6A strain was found to be highly resistant to some toxic heavy metals such as Cr+6, Cr+3, Cu+2, Co+2, Cd+2, Pb+2, Hg+2, U+6, tellurium, and selenite. Herein, high chromate tolerance of an isolated strain is reported with a high minimum inhibitory concentration value of 80,000 mg/L and the ...

Reductive activation with cysteine represents a chromium(III)-dependent pathway in the induction of genotoxicity by carcinogenic chromium(VI).

Induction of DNA damage by carcinogenic hexavalent chromium compounds [Cr(VI)] results from its reduction to lower oxidation states. Reductive metabolism of Cr(VI) generates intermediate Cr(V/IV)species, organic radicals, and finally Cr(III), which forms stable complexes with many biological ligands, including DNA. To determine the biological significance of different reaction products, we exam...

Optimization of Cr(VI) Photocatalytic Reduction by UV/TiO2 : Influence of Inorganic and Organic species and Kinetic Study

Background & Aims of the Study: Chromium is widely detected in surface waters and underground waters, which usually appear as Cr(VI), and Cr(III), at sites associated with industrial activities. Cr(VI), in effluent streams with a high level of mobility and notorious mutagenic and carcinogenic toxicity; thus Cr(III) does not have much mobility in soil. So, converting it into less h...

Background and Objective: Chromium is present in two oxidation forms of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Cr(III) is less toxic than Cr(VI). The aim of this article was to optimize an artificial neural network structure in modeling the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by TiO2-P25 nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: In this work, an artificial neural network (ANN) for the modeling photocatalytic reductio...

Photoreduction of Potassium Dichromate in Aqueous Solution using Cobalt doped ZnO Nanoparticles

Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles with different Cobalt contents were prepared by direct precipitation method. The materials were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. The XRD results indicated that the particle size of pure ZnO and Co-doped ZnO is about 30-45nm. The toxic Cr(VI) in industrial wastewaters can be removed by a reduction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) ...
